My kitty does not like the clear soft claws. The first 3 times the vet put on the clear ones she constantly chewed them off. I assumed she had not adjusted to them yet. On a whim I bought the black ones and had them put on. She never chewed on them. When one fell off I replaced it with a clear one that I had left over. As soon as she saw it was a clear one she pitched a fit and angrily chewed and chewed until she got it off. I was stunned to see her reaction. I had assumed the clear ones would be more natural looking and less noticeable to her. She definitely seems to prefer the black soft claws. She is a black and gray tabby so it could be they blend better with her natural coloring.
Update: Kitty is now on her second set of black soft claws and seems perfectly content. I was thrilled when I found out my vet would apply the soft claws. I supply the soft claws and the vet trims the claws and applies the soft claws for $10. Occasionally one will fall off but now that she is getting used to having her feet handled I can replace them without any problem.
Update 2: Kitty is one year old now and I have gotten really good at applying the caps. I finally got around to reading the instructions and found some helpful hints. Who knew? I learned not to fill the caps to full of glue as it will squish out the sides when you apply it to the claw and you have to work fast to remove it before you glue your finger to the kitty's paw like I did. By paying attention to her reactions I have learned how to make the whole process easier, quicker and more enjoyable for both of us. And it's just so cute the way she sits there patiently holding up her paw for me to trim her claws and apply the caps. I can't help but smile. I no longer look at it like a chore that has to be done. I enjoy it. She has been so good I took a video of her when I had to replace one of the caps. It's on YouTube. (MissBiscuit823 Kitty gets her manicure)
P.S. If you look up Applying Soft Paws on YouTube, you can see a video of how it's done. Of course, the person is putting on a whole new set and it goes rather quickly. I have never seen anyone show how to reapply one that has fallen off or how to get off the ones that are in need of replacing. When they fall off there is still old glue left on the nail. It now needs to be trimmed and old glue removed before new cap goes on. I use a Dremel to sand away the old glue. My kitty hates the high speed but is OK when I use the low speed. Also, when the cat uses a carpeted cat scratching post the nail caps do tend to get caught up in the carpet. I came up with a very simple solution... I got rid of it! I only use the cardboard type cat scratchers now. They can be mounted on the wall also so kitty can get a good stretch now and then. Even with the caps on I still encourage kitty to use the cat scratchers. When the caps fall off the nail underneath is long and sharp and I don't want her clawing the furniture before I can replace the cap.
